Nelson-Rigg (MC-905-02-MD) Hi-Visibility Yellow Medium Deluxe All-Season Cover Review

These are excellent bags for only around $100.

They are absolutely huge and easily swallow up several bags of groceries or other items. I've used them several times to carry a week's worth of clothing and other items for road trips - laptop computer included.

While they are a throw-over design, I've been able to keep them on the bike full time. The interior pockets hold multiple tools and accessories while the two outside pockets are great for things like a kickstand puck or a rag to wipe that occasional bit of gas spilled on the tank.

The reflective piping on the rear and side panels really pops at night when light hits it. The carry handles are nice when you want to take them inside.

Other than an occasional bit of adjustment, they don't require much fussing if left installed.

The down side? Well, there are three:

1) Like most bags of this type, they aren't fully waterproof. A light shower won't leak in, but heavy rain will. As with any saddle bag (even many of the hard shell types, which can also leak), pack things in plastic you don't want to get wet while traveling. They do come with rubberized covers, but I prefer to pack items in plastic bags anyway to keep things separated. Also, the covers are intended to slip over the bags while mounted on the bike, so they don't protect the back sides.

2) After several months of riding with them on the bike, they have faded from black to grey (except where the retaining straps cover). This doesn't particularily bother me, but it might for some. Honestly, they're made of nylon - they're going to fade. If you don't want bags that will fade, spend the bucks for hard shells or leather.

3) Another thing to consider is how far they'll have to sit forward when installed. If your rear signals are further forward than the tail light (causing the backs of the bags to sit too far forward), you may lose the ability to carry a passenger. If, like me, you don't ever carry passengers, this isn't a problem. However, in this situation, the front straps that gover the seat may intrude on the rider saddle. Mine lays in such a way that it's not uncomfortable, but different seats may have different results. If room is tight and you need to carry a passenger, you may want to consider something smaller.

For the price, you can't beat the overall quality, though. They're also much larger than those "shoe-box" sized bags you often see out there that wouldn't hold an amoured jacket with the pads installed.

The heat panels on the bottom do a great job of protecting the bags, especially where clearance from their size might be tight. I would still be careful about how close you get them to pipes without heat baffels, though.
