Alpinestars Supertech R Boots - 48/Black Review
Alpinestars Supertech R Boots, EUR 46, Black/Silver Vented
I didn't purchase these boots on a whim. I was originally looking for affordable riding boots until a discussion with a few riders and racers brought to my attention an important aspect of ankle protection that most boots do not address. Apparently, most boots do not have any type of ankle bracing, which allows your ankles to bend outwards/inwards to the point it gets dislocated. While many argue that this can only happen on a track, a few riders shared their experiences on the street where they either were protected by these ankle braces or wish they had them!
Only a handful of boots offer this type of ankle protection. Puma's 1000 series and most Dianese boots offer an external plastic mechanism that gives you this feature. Valentino Rossi's Dianese Axial Race boots have this brace on the outside. Sidi's older Vertigo Corsa and current Vortice have the external brace. Most other boots do not have them and can easily bend at the ankle area.
The older Supertech and the current Supertech R have an inner boot that has the ankle braces. After looking at the Sidi Vortice and Supertech R for a long hard time, I went with the Supertech for a number of reasons. Having the braces and safety features on the inner boot prevents them from being damaged the first time you hit the ground and also reduces the chances of snagging on the bike. Second, the outer boot is streamlined, which reduces the chances of snagging and offers an additional layer of protection. The president of Sportbike Track Gear (STG) reviewed his old pairs of Supertech and Supertech R boots and mentioned that he has fell off at the track over 10 times. The boots look pretty trashed but are still functional because the safety features are inside the boot.
Sizing is probably what most consumers are interested in. I did some research on this and feel that the Italian boot makers (Sidi, Dianese, and Alpinestars) used an incorrect conversion. All of my sneakers and tactical boots are size US 12. As you know, the sizing for EUR/French and UK specs is also listed on your shoes/boxes. It so happens that my US 12 sneakers and books are marked EUR/F 46 2/3 or 46. If you use Sidi/Dianese/Alpinestar's conversion, US 12 is a EUR 47, which is incorrect! The correct riding boot size is about 1 size smaller than what their chart states. Sidi actually had a measurement chart, and my feet corresponded to their EUR 46 size. I still recommend you go to the store to try them before buying, but using an existing conversion from your favorite boots is also a good idea.
In EUR 46, my Supertech R inner boot feels snug on the sides. A general complaint is that the Supertech R boots are a bit narrow, so you might need to step up 1 size to fit the width of your foot. I have only a small amount of room in front of my toes, so thicker socks ought to fix that problem.
The soles are pretty stiff, but they are comfortable enough for walking. The ankle braces don't get in your way as they are designed to articulate in a manner that complements natural ankle movement. If you try to bend the boots at the ankle, the braces do their job. There's also a plastic and metal slider on the outside of the sole edge. The cuff is well made with a covered zipper, inner bootie with speed lacing, and a polymer latching mechanism that allows you to tighten the cuff very easily.
The overall "cut" of the boots resembles a cowboy boot, but they are very streamlined and low-key compared to Dianese and Sidi boots, and offer a lot more protection than sandals, sneakers, or normal boots.
Overall: 5/5 stars, one of the best boots available. I'd recommend test fitting them, and perhaps looking at Puma 1000, Dianese, or Sidi Vortice if you don't like the Alpinestars. The ankle braces are alone worth the dough.
UPDATE:
After using the boots for a class and just riding around town for a total of 2 times, the soles under the balls of the feet are wearing fairly thin. The soles aren't easily replaced, so I will be looking at Sidi or Dainese in the future.
